01 Oct 2005  |  Glasgow University Sets a New Record

The Department of Electronics and Engineering at Glasgow University has for many years been at the forefront of new developments in high-speed electronic and optical components. Early last year the University established a new business unit, called Ultrafast, to commercialise its capabilities in advanced MMIC design and manufacture, focusing on the development of indium phosphide for aerospace and defence applications. The Ultrafast team, under Prof Iain Thayne, has pioneered a new process for fabricating InP components that deliver world-beating performance at 50-500GHz. Following on from an initial market study, daVinci Ventures was engaged to evaluate the level of market interest. During the work daVinci Ventures made contact with experts in the defence, space and aviation sectors in order to gather feedback on the technology and to identify early projects that require sample components. As a direct result Ultrafast now has several prospective customers and hopes to begin producing sample components early in 2006.
